What is avian influenza (bird flu)

Avian influenza is an infection caused by a type of influenza virus. Although many types of influenza influenza, of which now affects health workers is the H5N1 avian influenza. The influenza pandemic of 1918 (commonly called Spanish flu), seems to have its origin in the Far East, has been a flu epidemic that has spread to almost everyone. It is believed that cytokine storms were the leading cause of death in the 1918 pandemic.

The symptoms of bird flu

At first, symptoms of bird flu can be the same as the common flu symptoms such as:

 • A cough.
 • A sore throat.
 • Muscle pain.

Avian influenza can cause an eye infection (conjunctivitis).
Bird flu can progress rapidly to pneumonia and respiratory distress syndrome, a serious lung problem which can be fatal. For people who die of bird flu, the average time from onset of symptoms until death ranges from 9 to 10 days.
